The Irish are the favourites to win the championship but will face a stern test from the Scots, who have impressed in the first few months of 2016. I don¡¯t think Ireland will struggle to win the match, but I think they will need to improve on the the performances against the French, Dutch and Japanese in the last few months if they want to avoid a repeat of their victory against Italy last year. I suspect they will, and that means a win for Ireland and a drop of two places to 2/1 for the championship as a whole.

France¡¯s first match of 2016 was against Australia last weekend and a victory over the Wallabies will take them up to 11/8 in the betting. Les Bleus have often started poorly in championships recently but at least they now have two home matches to get it together after the Italy match. Italy face Wales in their opening match and the visitors are a tricky side. They have won their last two matches after beating Scotland at Murrayfield in December and a team containing Samu Pecori with nine caps under his belt could cause Wales some problems. That said, they are far from the finished article and after the international break, Wales should move back to 7/2 in the betting.

It¡¯s probably time to forget Wales¡¯ last championship. In 2013 they won a dismal tournament and if they don¡¯t face any major injuries, I can¡¯t see any reason why they can¡¯t do something similar. I just can¡¯t see that being in the opening round of this championship. It is entirely possible and I suspect at this stage of the season, but I just don¡¯t see them getting over the line against the Italians. A win and Wales are 7/2, a draw and they go up to 7/1 but it would take a big shock for them to lose. I don¡¯t think it will happen but I can see them drawing the match at the RDS, which will see them go up to 7/1.

England play Scotland in the opening round and the English are a tough team to analyse right now. Defeat by South Africa was a concern in South Africa. Defeat at Twickenham by the All Blacks just a few weeks later was a big shock but in defence of the English, the team were mostly missing one way or another and they had been more or less written off as a potential threat by all bar the most romantic supporter. As such, I¡¯m not too concerned by it and it is important to remember that the team improved massively in the second half of the match. In fact, they did well to not lose the match on account of some awful Scottish defending but they also showed signs of real quality.

Their first two matches are tough and so I think the first few weeks of the championship will give us a pretty good idea of just how good the team will be. Those first two matches are against Scotland and Ireland and the latter of the two will almost certainly be a big test for the English. If we use England¡¯s most recent matches against Scotland and Ireland in the Autumn to get a good indication of how the team could go in their first two matches, we can see how things pan out. England didn¡¯t do so well in Dublin last November, losing 139. The Scots didn¡¯t do so well against England in Brighton either as they lost 2913. It¡¯s a close one but it is at least worth noting that the difference in these two matches was 20 points.

If England can win their first two matches they will move up to 7/1 as per usual, but I can¡¯t see them winning both as I don¡¯t expect them to beat Ireland. Scotland are 14/1 at the moment but winning one of their first two matches would take them up to 6/1 and winning both will take them up to 11/2 as per usual. If we look at the opening round of the championship as a whole and assume the obvious, which is that Ireland will beat Scotland at the RDS then what does it tell us about the rest of the championship? Well, at this stage I¡¯m not too sure. In fact, with that in mind, I¡¯ll just use Ireland and England to work out what each of the other teams are likely to do in their first two matches.

I don¡¯t think England will win their first two matches, but I think they can do just about enough to stay in the mix at 7/1. I¡¯ll assume the obvious and say they beat Scotland at home as well as Wales away. If we do that then the biggest thing that the result at the RDS tells us is that England are still very much in the mix at 7/1. A big one for me personally would be a result for Italy against Wales, but I can¡¯t see them beating the Italians at the RDS. That would take them up to 6/1. Ireland obviously have to win at home but even if they do, I just don¡¯t see them beating England at Twickenham.

The Italians can beat Wales at the RDS in a close game and go to 6/1. England should be up to 7/1 as usual. I just don¡¯t see them winning both of their first two matches, which would take them to 11/2. France will be a big price to win the championship at this stage but that¡¯s not the point. It would take a shock for them to win their first two matches at home and in a nutshell I don¡¯t think they will do that. Wales can be assumed to beat Italy at the RDS but again, that¡¯s not the point. It would take a shock for them to beat France at home.

That would take them to 9/2. Ireland beat Scotland at the RDS and Scotland beat England away and that would leave the English at 7/1 and France at 11/2. As I say, I don¡¯t think any of the four teams will win both of their first two matches but I also don¡¯t think they will win one and drop off. We can use the results of these first two matches and the evidence in the next few weeks to work out what the others teams will do in their first two matches. France and Italy are best off at the RDS and if either of them win their first two matches then they will move to 7/1 and 11/2, respectively.

Wales and Scotland are second best at the RDS and if either of them wins their first two matches then they will move to 7/1 and 9/2, respectively. Ireland are third best at the RDS and if they beat Scotland at home then they will move to 6/1. The French would move up to 6/1 if they beat Wales away. That would leave the English as the next best team and if they beat Scotland at home and Italy away then they will move up to 7/1. That¡¯s all based on the results at the RDS but if any of them win their first two matches then it will be France at the RDS who have the best chance of getting it together. That¡¯s not the point, of course, but it is an interesting one and it gives us a good starting point.

In fact, let¡¯s stick with France. They have a very good chance of getting it together and while they have a good chance of winning the championship, they would take a bit of a gamble to beat Wales at home. They would need to win one of their first two matches to be sure of it but they would still only move up to 11/2 if they did. A win for them at the RDS would take them to 6/1 and that would be the start of the list of the teams most likely to win the championship after the opening round. As a whole then, I think the best team to back are Ireland and England.

Conclusion

The Scottish are a very good team and they have been very good in the last year and a half. They have a very good chance of getting it together but I think the rest of the team will find it tough to beat the Irish at home. The English should be able to do enough to stay in the mix at 7/1 as well as Wales away. If we use the first two matches as a gauge for the whole championship then that means we have a shortlist of the teams most likely to win the championship after the opening round. They are Ireland and England as I say, and they are the two teams that I would back. I just can¡¯t see the French being as good as either of the other two.

[1

post-10031","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-blog
["GET
